About The Role

The Creative Engineering team builds compelling user experiences that tell the story of Shopify and its products to customers, prospects, and partners. Our job is to create a world where more entrepreneurs exist and make sure they love Shopify. We collaborate closely with designers, content strategists, product managers, data scientists, and our broader marketing teams to produce websites and campaigns that dazzle users with visuals, animations, and engaging content… all with leading web performance metrics, accessibility, reliability, and at global scale. We are stewards of web development best practices, applying the latest HTML, CSS, and JavaScript APIs, and working with React and Remix to deliver experiences that scale and perform well on all devices.

Staff Frontend Developers in the Creative Engineering team use their expertise and passion to multiply the overall output of their development team. You’re as comfortable discussing performance and web vitals as color palettes and motion design. As a technical leader within Marketing, you’ll work among our team of Frontend Engineers on campaigns and initiatives across various marketing channels and touch points. You’ll engineer design systems, tools, and platforms (like CMS) that enable fast-paced changes and highly-dynamic requirements. You’ll lead planning, resourcing, and executing projects and will also collaborate across different crafts and leadership teams to help realize a diverse set of creative projects. You will maintain a high bar for quality and lead and mentor other engineers. And of course, you’ll be hands-on in the code and contribute technically.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated mastery of server and client-side React (Remix is a plus) and strong understanding of web technologies including latest HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

• Deep understanding of one or more specific client-side areas like animation, web performance, or accessibility for example.

• Familiarity with web visuals/motion, SVG, masking, threeJS, GSAP

• Experience working with (and contributing to) design systems and component libraries.

• Familiar with tracking, experiment, and attribution systems (and an understanding of why these are important)

• An eye for detail and a high quality bar; strong advocate for the team applying the right patterns and improving capacity to ship great code.

• Leadership to provide technical direction, and mentor other developers to ramp them up for increased impact.

• Able to balance trade-offs appropriately to ship solutions in the short-term while building for the long term and aligning with Shopify engineering principles and patterns.
  
  

Nice to have:

• Previous work in an agency or creative environment delivering large-scale, multi-language websites, microsites, landing pages, and campaigns with complex internationalization and localization requirements.

• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails and Node.js is a plus.

• Experience working in/on CMS systems is a plus.
