Senior Software Engineer Research Platforms
Science is developing technologies for a range of serious unmet medical needs. We are unafraid to take difficult technical risks, secure in the knowledge that with a clear understanding of what we are doing and with support from powerful modern tools, more progress is possible than might be immediately obvious. Regardless of role or team, the two most important factors we look for in a candidate are evidence of exceptional ability and the addition of positive energy to the group. As a small, very early stage team in a largely unstructured environment, the ability to independently orient yourself to the problems that need to be solved and then follow through is essential.
Science is developing a software application for ingesting, visualizing, and interpreting neural data. We are looking for an experienced software engineer to help build out this app, in close collaboration with a world-class team of scientists and engineers. You will work with the electronics and neuroscience teams to build tools that they will use every day. Great communication skills are a must, and we're looking for technical and product judgment above all: can you ask the right questions to absorb other people’s mental models, then turn around and build things that make sense for the situation, quickly?
Key qualifications:
3+ years as a software engineer, with depth in front end web development, and ideally comfortable in the React ecosystem.
Experience developing and profiling performant frontend applications.
Effective collaborator; the ability to work with other teams to understand their problem domain and needs, gather feedback, and ultimately deliver valuable software.
Demonstrated ability to quickly deliver features in a small, high-impact team.
Keen sense for the right tool for the job; awareness of the tools and technologies available, with the ability to search for and select the most appropriate option.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience designing and implementing 2D and / or 3D visualizations in the browser; experience with tools and APIs such as WebGL, three.js, D3, or WASM.
Experience working on video streaming and playback software.
Our stack is Electron / C++, gRPC, ZMQ. Experience with at least some of these technologies is a plus.
Other qualifications that are not necessary but beneficial; a background in research or neuroscience; experience working with hardware, & integrating devices.

Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on the indicated salary band.
