Digital Metal is building the world’s first fully automated, on-demand metal casting platform.
We combine additive manufacturing, computational geometry, and robotic automation to deliver finished cast metal parts in days, instead of weeks, with no order minimums. Engineers upload CAD files directly to our web app and instantly receive manufacturability feedback, quotes, and lead times all powered by our custom geometry engines and quoting logic.
While traditional foundries rely on manual gating, tooling, and quoting processes, we’re re-imagining every step.
Role Overview
We’re hiring a Founding Engineer to help build and scale the Digital Metal platform, from our instant quoting web app to the backend systems and geometry engines that drive production.
This is a founding-level technical role with significant equity and ownership over the architecture, infrastructure, and product roadmap.
You’ll work directly with the founding team to build the digital backbone of an automated foundry, connecting CAD files, pricing logic, and manufacturing automation into one seamless system.
What You’ll Do
- Build and scale the Digital Metal web app, the customer-facing interface for quoting, ordering, and managing metal parts.
- Develop and optimize our geometry engine for quoting, manufacturability analysis, and pattern/gating generation.
- Integrate CAD/CAE functionality (STEP/STL parsing, geometry analysis, feature detection, mesh processing, etc.) into a modern web architecture.
- Collaborate on backend logic that connects the quoting engine to real production systems and internal tools.
- Create internal dashboards and tools to automate workflows in quoting, production, and logistics.
- Work directly with the founder and co-founder on product design, technical architecture, and long-term platform direction.
Ideal Background
You don’t need foundry experience, but you do need to love solving hard technical problems in geometry, manufacturing, and automation.
Preferred Experience:
- Full-stack development (React / Next.js, Python / FastAPI / Node)
- CAD, CAE, or computational geometry experience (OpenCascade, Trimesh, CGAL, or similar)
- 3D file processing (STEP, STL, OBJ) and mesh/solid modeling
- Simulation or FEA experience (thermal, structural, or solidification a plus)
- Cloud infrastructure and CI/CD (Vercel, Railway, Supabase, etc.)
- Strong product intuition — you like making technical tools delightful and fast
- Experience in early-stage startups or as a first engineer
Nice to Have:
- Familiarity with CAD kernels (Parasolid, ACIS, OpenCascade)
- Experience with geometry libraries (CadQuery, PyMesh, OCC, Three.js)
- Prior work in manufacturing tech, robotics, or physical automation systems
